A photograph taken a century ago and printed with today's media looks thoroughly contemporary. What is depicted could be due to careful direction since the photograph itself is always true and always through the gaze staged. On the other hand the classification of photographs based on the depicted subjects is an easy categorization but also completely useless since the important thing is never the what but the how. Also all the adjectives one could use to group photographers and photographs together would negate the artistic quality and value of the medium. Labeling a photographic work as military activist political travel sports erotic advertising commercial and anything else one could think of obliterates the artistic value of the photograph under the weight of motivation or purpose.
Reality the films that were later characterized as neorealist by many critics but never by their creators belonged to a number of good directors Pasolini De Sica Visconti Rossellini etc. whose directorial signature excluded any artistic affinity. The common characteristics of neorealist films that account for their classification in neorealism are the preoccupation with pauperism I believe that the only e-commerce photo editing distinction that could help approach photography is one that seeks its intentions.
